BIRDWATCHING BAHIA - PANTANAL
There are approximately 9,000 species of birds identified in the entire world and Brazil is one of the countries with the largest number of species: more than 1,780 species recorded in its territory Brazil is the third country in the world in number of bird variety, after Colombia and Perú, but also the country with the highest number of endangered birdspecies. Out of the 1.212 world endangered bird species, 120 are in Brazil. 171 out of the 202 animal species officially declared as endangered in 1989 live in tha Atlantic Rainforest. Our birdwatching tours concentrate on two of the most interesting areas in Brazil, the endangered lush forest hills of the Atlantic Rainforrest of Bahía and the fabulous Pantanal wetlands, visiting some of the best wildlife areas in South America, for some of the finest birdwatching in the world, and a superb array of mammals. JANAINA NATURAL RESERVE (BAHIA) In the region of Bahia, specialists will lead us through Janaina Nature Reserve to observe the endemic birds of one of the continent's most threatened ecosystems, the Atlantic Rainforest. With almost 950 kinds of birds occurring in this hotspot, and one famed for its number and variety of primates, amongs rare and endangered birds seen are: Red-billed Curassow (Crax blumenbachii), White-necked Hawk (Leucopternis lacernulatus), Blue-throated Parakeet (Pyrrhura cruentata), Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta) or Bahia Spinetail (Synallaxis whitneyi). Accomodation is in a real fazenda close to the natural reserve and in the nearby village of Itacaré, tropical paradise on the Cacao coast with its innumerable places of natural beauty. Minimum stay: 3 days. Closest international airport: Salvador de Bahía Closest national airport: Ilhéus PANTANAL (MATO GROSSO) Located in the south of Brazil right on the border with Bolivia, the Pantanal astounds by its sheer size, making it, seasonally, the largest wetland in the world. Many believe it to be the world's finest wetland for birds. The floodwaters of the Paraná create a haven for thousands of waterbirds including the massive Jabiru stork and the spectacular Hyacinth Macaw, as well as ibis herons gathering to feed,as well as some impressive mammals, from Giant Otters to the rarely-seen Jaguar. From July to October the shrinking of vast flooded areas at the beginning of the dry season concentrates fish for birds and thousands of different birds gather - such as wood-storks, egrets ibises, spoonbills, herons, and cormorants. Some of the specialities we'll look for include Purplish Jay, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Red-billed Scythebill, Nanday Parakeet, Great Rufous Woodcreeper, Toco Toucan, Bare-faced Curassow, the endemic Chestnut-bellied Guan and many, many others. Minimum stay: 5 days. Closest international airport: Sao Paulo / Rio de Janeiro Closest national airport: Campo Grande / Cuiabá
