Colonial Brazil comprises the period from 1500, with the arrival of the Portuguese, until 1815, when Brazil was elevated to United Kingdom with Portugal. The rich colonial and cultural heritage, influenced by Brazil’s great ethnic diversity offers exquisite example of eighteenth-century Portuguese architecture both in bigger cities such as Salvador de Bahía or Sao Luis de Maranhao, and in small picturesque towns like Paraty and Olinda, the highlight being the state of Minas Gerais and its Gold Route, along which several small towns offer a stunning baroque architecture. Brazil's origins - the Indians with their reed flutes, the Portuguese with their singers and viola players, and the Africans with their many thrilling rhythms - make it a musical country. The bossa nova, music that mingles the Brazilian samba beat with jazz, the seductive rhythm of the samba, and other joyous and energetic rhythms will captivate and make you feel part of the vibrant Brazil. The capoeira comes from the time of African slavery: the meeting of two African cultures of the Gulf of Benin and Sudan were decisive in the development of Bahian culture. The capoeira is a mix of dance and martial art bound up in ritual and accompanied by song and music. Originated in Bahía, capoeira rodas are one of the most amazing and beautiful spectacles to see.
